A transparent breakdown of how AfterGen’s credit pricing works — from payment processing fees and electricity costs to taxes, server upkeep, and why subscriptions offer better value than one-time packs.
AfterGen is a privacy-first AI image editing service. Every edit is processed on dedicated hardware running continuously, and we price credits so the service stays sustainable without hidden fees or dark patterns. This page explains, in plain English, how we calculate our prices and why larger packs and subscriptions cost less per image.
The basics: credits and cost per image
AfterGen uses a simple credit model
- 1 image edit = 5 credits
- You can buy credits as a one-time pack or via a monthly subscription
- Subscriptions are cancel anytime
Current pricing at a glance
One-time credit packs (lifetime credits)
| Pack | Credits | Approx. Images | Price | Effective €/Image |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 250 | 50 | €5.99 | €0.120 |
| Creator | 500 | 100 | €9.99 | €0.100 |
| Power | 1,500 | 300 | €19.99 | €0.066 |
Subscriptions (monthly credits, better value)
| Plan | Credits / Month | Approx. Images | Price / Month | Effective €/Image |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 500 | 100 | €5.99 | €0.060 |
| Pro | 1,500 | 300 | €12.99 | €0.043 |
| Premium | 3,000 | 600 | €19.99 | €0.033 |
Note: “Effective €/Image†is a simple division of price by included images (credits ÷ 5). It’s not a statement of our internal cost per image — it’s a user-facing way to compare value.
What goes into our pricing
1) Payment processing fees (PayPal)
We use PayPal for payments because it’s trusted and widely used — but it comes with transaction costs. In most setups, PayPal charges a combination of:
- a fixed fee per transaction (e.g., a few dozen cents), plus
- a percentage of the total amount (typically a few percent)
This matters a lot at small price points: a fixed fee is proportionally bigger on a €5.99 purchase than on a €19.99 purchase. That’s one reason why we don’t offer ultra-tiny packs (they would be dominated by payment fees).
How this affects you
- Larger purchases waste less on fixed payment fees
- Subscriptions are more efficient because billing is predictable and happens once per month
2) Electricity costs (idle + processing)
AfterGen runs on hardware that stays online 24/7 so edits can start quickly when you submit a job. That means there are two electricity components:
- Idle power (the server being available around the clock)
- Processing power (a short burst while your image is being edited)
A single edit typically takes ~30–40 seconds under load. The energy for one edit is small — but the always-on availability (idle) is a real monthly baseline cost that needs to be covered, especially in months with lower usage.
Why it matters for pricing
Even if per-image energy is low, running a reliable service includes the cost of being available all the time.
3) Infrastructure and upkeep (beyond electricity)
Sustainable pricing isn’t only about power draw. It also includes
- hardware wear and tear (GPU/CPU usage, storage, fans, cooling)
- maintenance and monitoring (keeping the service stable and secure)
- backups and operational tooling
- time spent on support, bug fixes, and improvements
We want AfterGen to remain fast, practical, and privacy-first — which means we invest in reliability instead of cutting corners.
4) Taxes and compliance
Depending on your location and customer type, taxes may apply (for example, VAT in many jurisdictions). On top of that, business income is taxed. In other words:
- not all gross revenue becomes “profitâ€
- part of each payment goes to taxes and compliance costs
We bake this reality into pricing so we can keep the service running long-term without surprise price hikes.
Why bigger packs are cheaper per image
You’ll notice that the €/image decreases as you go up in pack size. That’s intentional and fair: larger purchases are cheaper per unit because:
- the fixed PayPal fee is spread across more credits
- operational overhead is easier to predict
- fewer transactions reduce administrative cost
This is classic volume pricing — the same principle as buying in bulk.
Why subscriptions are cheaper than one-time packs
Subscriptions offer the best value for two reasons
Lower transaction overhead
A subscription is billed once per month, which keeps the fixed payment fee from dominating the purchase.
Predictable demand helps us run the service efficiently
With subscriptions, we can plan capacity better (server availability, queue management, and future upgrades). That efficiency is shared back as a lower price per image.
How subscription credits work (monthly reset model)
To keep subscriptions fair and sustainable, subscription credits use a monthly allowance model:
- Each month, your plan provides a fixed amount of credits (e.g., Basic: 500 credits/month).
- At renewal, your credits are set to the plan amount again.
- Subscription credits are intended for ongoing usage and do not accumulate indefinitely.
Why we do it this way
- prevents “stockpiling†for a single month of heavy usage after long periods of inactivity
- keeps the system fair for all users and avoids extreme load spikes
- allows us to keep subscription prices low
One-time credits are different
One-time credits are “lifetime credits†— they remain available until you use them.
Our goal: fair, simple, privacy-first pricing
AfterGen is built around a few principles
- Transparent pricing (no hidden “gotchasâ€)
- Fast, practical AI image editing
- Privacy-first processing (we focus on results, not building a public gallery of user uploads)
- Sustainability (the service should exist next month, next year, and beyond)
That’s why we offer both one-time packs and subscriptions — so you can choose what fits your workflow.
Quick FAQ
Why not charge “just a few cents†like big providers?
Large providers often run massive clusters at near-constant utilization and optimize billing at scale. AfterGen prioritizes privacy-first processing, straightforward UX, and reliable availability on dedicated hardware — which has a different cost structure. We still aim to stay competitive, especially via subscriptions.
What’s the cheapest way to use AfterGen?
If you edit regularly, the Premium subscription offers the lowest effective cost per image. If you edit occasionally, a one-time pack may fit better.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Subscriptions are cancel anytime. You keep access until the end of your billing period.
